Problem

I can export the images from Shutter Stream to say JPEG. I then open Lightroom (LR) and it will not import them. It just freezes. This is the same if they are PNGs as well. When I force stop the import LR says no images found.  Sometimes, Lightroom wont even open. When I restart my computer I can then get Lightroom to open but it still freezes and does not import the images. After uninstalling Shutter Stream, Lightroom opened straight away.

Solution

The issue is most likely related to non-matching camera SDKs.  In order to support Nikon and Canon cameras (Windows and Mac) we use the official SDKs from Nikon and Canon, respectively.  Lightroom also uses the same SDKs.  While we update to the latest SDKs as soon as they are released (due to bug fixes and support for additional features/cameras), Lighroom may take longer to update, or your version of Lightroom uses a different version of the SDKs than Shutter Stream.  Here are some ideas you can try:

  1. If you are using both Light Room and Shutter Stream on the same
computer, there might be an issue with the Nikon/Canon SDKs. Somehow, when Shutter Stream is
installed, our SDKs get in the way of Lightroom's SDKs in what's known
as "DLL Hell" and everything goes to pieces.
  2. Please make sure that the freeze you're observing is NOT due to
Lightroom not starting and that it is indeed due to the import step.
To do this, please make sure that you have Lightroom started first and
then try to import a non Shutter Stream JPEG image. Does it work? If it
does, then without closing anything, try to import a Shutter Stream
image. If it does not, then the issue is not with Shutter Stream
images, but with Lightroom itself and this might again point to (1).
  3. If you have access to two computers, please install Shutter Stream
on one and Lightroom on the other. Then take the JPG images from
Shutter Stream, copy them on a USB stick and try to import them into
    Light Room. Does it work?
  4. If (3) still fails, then try to take an image from Shutter
Stream, read it into Photoshop (assuming you have it) or into any other
3rd party JPG viewer and save it out to a new file name. Will that new
file name import into Lightroom now?

Key points to remember:
  1. Shutter Stream Nikon/Canon SDKs conflict with Lightroom's version.  Upgrade both software packages to the latest versions.  We've received feedback that Shutter Stream 2.1 and higher will not work with with Lightroom 5, but will with Lightroom 6.
  2. Try using Shutter Stream and Lightroom on separate computers and see if the export/import works.
